About us

The genesis of ARCS dates back to New Year’s Eve1995 when the idea of an adult recreational choir arose as the clock stroked midnight. Second Chants, a division of Youth Singers of Calgary, was formed in the spring of 1996 under the direction of Brian Bowman. The non-auditioned choir quickly gained in popularity and by 2001 had grown to 65 singers. In the summer of 2002, facing growing pains and a desire for independence, the Adult Recreational Choir Society of Calgary (ARCS) was formed. Up2Something, the first member of the ARCS family, began rehearsals in the fall of 2002 with some 70 enthusiastic singers. A second choir, Up2Christmas, was added in 2004. A women’s chorus, She’s Up2Something, was added in January 2006 and now enjoys a membership of 60 women.
ARCS’ season finales have become popular with all ages. From their inaugural “New York! New York!” to “Music, Magic and Mayhem”, the choirs of ARCS take fun seriously! Infused into every performance is rich and diverse repertoire, often extravagant costumes, and a healthy dose of humor. The incorporation of choreography and theatrical elements makes for a fun experience for performers and audience alike.
ARCS welcomes new singers throughout the year. More than 150 adults are now part of the ARCS family of choirs...and there’s always room for more! Contact us Please see the How to Join tab for details about becoming part of ARCS.
