About ARCS
The genesis of ARCS dates back to New Year’s Eve 1995 when the idea
of an adult recreational choir arose as the clock stroked midnight.
Second Chants,
a division of Youth Singers of Calgary, was formed in the spring of
1996 under the direction of Brian Bowman.
The non-auditioned choir quickly gained in popularity and by 2001
had grown to 65 singers. Their season finales became popular with
all ages. Themes like “Rags to Riches” and “We Are Family” provided
rich and diverse repertoire, while the incorporation of choreography
and theatrical elements made for a fun experience for performers and
audience alike – and continue to do so!
In the summer of 2002, facing growing pains and a desire for independence, the Adult Recreational Choir Society of Calgary (ARCS) was formed. Up2Something, the first member of the ARCS family, began rehearsals in the fall of 2002 with some 70 enthusiastic singers and grew to its present size of 75. A second choir, Up2Christmas, was added in 2004. A women’s chorus, Shes Up2Something, was added in January 2006. More than 120 adults are now part of the ARCS family of choirs. There's always room for more!
